Mother’s Cake: An ecstatic punch for the senses in the heart of London
Austrian psychedelic space rock band Mother’s Cake brought its mesmerising show to London in an impressive reminder that good times are often found in spontaneity and don’t necessarily need big scenes, flashing lights and packed crowds.
The night at O2 Academy Islington began on the right foot with a highly powered (although a tad too short), set by District 13. The London-based heavy alternative rock band consists of an international trio – vocals and guitar by Jon (British), drums by Asen (Bulgarian) and bass by Alessio (Italian). Their most prominent songs, ‘Emotive Addiction’ and ‘Step Into The Fire’, amplified the heat, powered by heavy riffs, pounding drums, as well as raw and gritty vocals.
With a blend of heavy alternative and classic rock mastered to perfection, District 13 created the ultimate setting for an out-of-this-world experience that was to follow shortly after.
As part of their Ultrabliss Tour 2025, Mother’s Cake took the stage to deliver an electrifying, more than 90-minute set that walked us… no, wait – rocked us through an exhilarating blend of funk, hard rock and progressive/psychedelic music. Throughout the night, vocalist Yves Krismer managed to combine the intensity and the depth of the band’s cosmic sounds with lighthearted, playful remarks in a continuous symbiosis with the crowd. More than 200 people were intertwined in this energetic exchange which by the end escalated to a contained – but still impactful – mosh pit. The setlist included a captivating range from the band’s repertoire, including the politically driven ‘I’m Your President’, the romantic-filled ‘Love Me’ and the nirvana-seeking ‘One of These Days’.
All in all, Mother’s Cake delivered an ecstatic punch for the senses – an original recipe that is, to an extent, reminiscent of a mixture comprising Tame Impala and a dash of Kings of Leon. And on the chance that you have not yet listened to District 13’s and Mother’s Cake’s stuff yet (streaming or live), this is your cue – you won’t regret it!
