ERRA: silence outlives the earth

ERRA’s latest album, silence outlives the earth, presents a band that knows exactly who they are. The Birmingham, Alabama five-piece show they are still at the cutting edge of the progressive metal scene. Across eleven tracks, they remind fans that we all share similar struggles, living in a constant state of flux, caught between conflicting emotions, and that we must lift each other up to keep moving forward on life’s journey.

The opener, ‘Stelliform’, draws music lovers straight into the album’s main messages. It’s strong and heavy, and would be great for audiences to feel a sense of togetherness as they release their pain at a concert. The track encourages listeners to remember that even when surrounded by darkness, there is always light at the end of the tunnel and a path back to happiness.

‘Further Eden’ feels tailor-made for anyone frustrated by the current state of the world. ERRA encourage listeners to release their anger and anxiety about the future of the human race: “We’re on the wrong side of a loaded gun”. The next track, their 2025 single ‘Gore of Being’, presents a similar message, validating feelings of numbness in today’s society: “It’s overwhelming in the emptiness”. Through this song, listeners feel understood in their struggle to find purpose. ERRA remind us that it’s okay to feel empty, but it’s never okay to suffer in silence and no one should feel alone in their battles.

‘Echo sonata’ highlights the band’s concern for their listeners’ wellbeing: “Are you still breathing?” Placed at the start of the chorus, this lyric encourages us to keep fighting our demons, even when everything feels like it’s crumbling — a message that resonates deeply. This idea is emphasised by Jesse Cash (guitar/clean vocals), who explains that “a lot of the personal turmoil that’s being expressed in the lyrics are global issues”.

‘Lucid threshold’ continues ERRA’s expression of frustration with the state of the world: “Can we stay while I sleep in another world / escape inside my memory in a lucid dream”. Here, the band calls on audiences to support one another, ensuring that everyone feels free to be themselves during their time on earth.

The closing triptych of ‘i. the many names of God’, ‘ii. In the gut of the wolf’ and ‘iii. Twilight in the reflection of dreams’ adds an extra dimension to the album and reinforces its central message: it’s okay to struggle in response to the state of the world and it’s healthy to release your pain. However, we must work together to create a world where we can speak openly about our feelings. This thematic consistency of the album is underlined by Cash, who notes that “there’s a real continuity of theme from start to finish”.

Overall, this album is a powerful continuation of ERRA’s musical evolution. It stands as an emotional response to the way the current state of the world is affecting humanity. Its messages are moving and purposeful, staying true to the values the band hold at their core.
