Mothica: Something In Between
‘Something In Between’ is Mothica’s beautifully haunting macabre-infused gift to the world. This 5-track EP will have you crashing out in the best way. Cool tones, yearning choruses and head banging breakdowns, embracing the gloom of these last winter days has just got a bit easier.
‘Evergreen Misery’ shows that you can be melancholy and fun. With captivating smokey tones, Mothica paints a grief-tinged tale that you will find yourself bopping along to… that’s until you get to the chorus! No time was wasted introducing a heart-wrenching hook that you cannot help but release from the pit of your soul: “my misery is evergreen”. Maintaining momentum until the end, soft, reaching wails disappear in the crash of a guitar-lead interlude. This is a strong start to the EP and I could not wait to get into the rest of it!
The rising choir in the chorus of ‘Weapon’ anchors the shadow-touched essence of the EP and provides the perfect backdrop to the powerful lyrics. Delicate intentional vocals confess “self-destruction is my pass time”, a raw and open declaration that many can relate to. Incorporating sheering knives and a firing gun into the breakdown ramped up the intensity of the story and had me nodding along with approval and creative admiration.
Mothica’s latest single that features on the EP ‘Save Your Roses’ grabs your attention with an immediate gritty riff and explosive drum duo. High energy and pop essence produce an abundance of catchiness on this track without forgoing the dark tone. The hard-hitting message “don’t save your roses for my grave”, that was born out of a conversation between Mothica and a fan, keeps the soul-stirring energy in check.
Each track has a meaningful message to unlock and ‘Bullet’ is no exception. The lyrics throughout the EP create hard-hitting visuals and vivid metaphors that stand out. The imagery and meaning of “always reaching for the roses just to embrace the thorns” is wonderfully dark and caught my attention. The celestial flavor of Mothica’s vocals on this track beautifully contradict the lyrical tale of discomfort and struggle. One strength Mothica demonstrates on this EP is the ability to address and connect with difficult, uncomfortable emotions in a non-confrontational way.
‘Somewhere In Between’ ensures a lasting impression. Warm velvety notes lead you into the zesty chorus, echoing and dazzlingly in equal measure. Zingy guitars rotate with potent lyrics to keep you suspended in the immersion of the track. Between “a day dream and a guillotine” is not just somewhere Mothica lives but somewhere we all are when listening to this EP, and it is enthralling.
