Shinedown: EI8HT
Shinedown return with a bang in the form of their eight studio album, ‘EI8HT’, solidifying their prominent role in the genre-bending crossover between alternative rock, post-grunge and pop-rock – and doing it so effortlessly after marking quarter of a century since their inception in 2001.
If you think the Florida-based quartet have been idly warming the bench since their last record, ‘Planet Zero’, was released in 2022, you’d be dead wrong. Behind the curtain, the band have been doubling down on new music both for their dedicated fans and the wider audience alike. So much so that we are pleasantly surprised with the vastly generous, 18-track-strong project that is their latest album coming out on 29 May via Atlantic Records.
Some of you will have noticed that Shinedown have been making waves in the past year, having already dropped five pre-release singles off the record. And what a buildup that is! ‘Dance, Kid, Dance’, an absolute banger, came out at the start of 2025, in a bid to make a not-so-subtle hint that something masterfully brilliant is being steadily prepared by the band. Worthy of having a two-part world tour named after it, the track is a catchy, high-tempo call for listeners to put social anxiety and pressure behind, and instead embrace a more authentic version that should “run while you got the chance” and “dance, kid, dance” when facing life’s adversities. The song’s release saw Shinedown writing history, topping the #1 spot on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Airplay chart at the time and turning the band into the first-ever act to score 20 number one titles on the chart.
The pre-release cycle continued with grief-stricken ballad, ‘There Six Five’, exploring the heavily soaked emotions of losing a loved one and comprehending how quickly time passes, especially when measured through those brief final moments shared together.
A personal favourite off the album, ‘Killing Fields’, was released shortly after. The opening resembles a mysterious prologue at the start of a theatrical play, building up in anticipation to evolve into a highly energetic depiction of a chaotic world where the protagonist explores addiction, confusion and a “surreal” state of being in a “house of mirrors”.
‘Searchlight’ and ‘Safe And Sound’ followed suit, with the latter becoming the band’s 25th No. 1 at the Mediabase Active Rock chart last week. Raw and aggressive, amplified by heavy pull-off riffs and a blistering guitar solo, ‘Safe And Sound’ is here to command respect, it’s about “reminding the competition what they are dealing with one by one”, explained lead vocalist Brent Smith upon its release.
All this momentum should be sufficient for you to believe the hype and get your hands (and ears) on this album as soon as it’s out. In the unlikely event that you are still unconvinced, rest assured that Shinedown have plenty more in their substantial tracklist to amaze you with: from powerhouses ‘Bear With Me’ and ‘Burning Down The Disco’ to melancholic ‘Young Again’ and slower-paced ‘So Glad That You Asked’, there is a piece of the band’s emblematic sound for everyone longing for an anthemic listening experience.
The release of ‘EI8HT’ will be supported by the ‘Dance, Kid, Dance Act II’ World Tour, spanning more than 50 dates across North America, Europe and the UK by the end of the year. And judging by the captivating tunes we’ve witnessed so far, hearing those live should be nothing short of a show of a lifetime!
