Tarja: Frisson Noir

Finnish soprano Tarja is back with ‘Frisson Noir’ – an immersive soundscape that bridges the worlds of symphonic metal and cinematic glory, carried by a journey through deep emotion. Out on 12 June, the album explores the physical thrill of music itself: that shiver-inducing moment when sound transcends its form to become not only a haunting feeling but a full-body and soul experience.

The album opens with a brief mesmerising instrumental intro. This is followed by the title song which blends together an intense symphonic metal sound with the vocal prowess of former Nightwish’s lead singer to create a masterful production that sets the tone for a record that will capture your full attention and have you engrossed throughout.

‘The Eternal Return’ opens with chanting background voices which make their way through the chorus, crawling under your skin to the point of full immersion into a cinematic-like universe. Nearing the end of the production, Tarja’s voice becomes the captivating centrepiece we all know her for. Supported by a melancholic slow piano accompaniment, her impeccable vocals soar to new heights only to erupt in hard-hitting guitar riffs and drum pounding for an even more pronounced finish.

The album follows strongly with ‘Leap of Faith’. Notably, this is a beautifully carried nearly 7-minute track featuring powerful vocal support from Marko Hietala (former bassist and male vocalist of Nightwish, current vocalist and bassist for heavy metal band Tarot). The unison strongly reminds of the 00s era of Nightwish and the flawless harmony intertwined in Tarja and Marko’s joint vocal prowess in some of the band’s most prominent titles at the time, including ‘Wish I Had an Angel’ and ‘The Phantom of the Opera’.

‘Frisson Noir’ continues with ‘At Sea’, a 10-minute symphonic metal opus which was released as the first single off the album on 18 March. At the start, a transformation scene of fairy piano tunes ascends the intensity to blend with a towering violin and powerful guitars, bass and drums. The song then moves on to embrace Tarja’s highly emotional and impactful vocal performance which speaks volumes about facing the unknown and rising to the challenge by overcoming fear and trusting faith in one’s own strength:

“No matter the pain, no matter the fear
I watched the world I knew fall down
The sea and I have learned to share
Live in this sacred battleground
Faith doesn't beg for light; it feeds on the dark
The storm I faced became the truth I gave”

‘At Sea’ could easily be described as a sonic landscape that categorically captures the core concept of ‘Frisson Noir’, as any avid listener will feel the almost indescribable sensation of a complete transcendence into the music realm and thrilling emotion into an undeniable organic symbiosis. Tarja depicts it best: “It is the instant when sound stops being just sound and becomes emotion, memory, and physical sensation. Frisson Noir was created around this idea. In an era where technology can generate songs instantly, the album celebrates the human element in music: real performances, breath, imperfection, uncontrolled emotion, and the unpredictable spark that turns a song into an experience.”

The remainder of this epic symphonic journey comprises other definitive gems, including collaboration tracks ‘Tango’ (featuring Apocalyptica), ‘I Don’t Care’ (featuring Cradle of Filth’s lead vocalist Dani Filth) and ‘Against the Odds’ (featuring Chad Smith, drummer of Red Hot Chili Peppers).

Tarja’s latest work is among her heaviest yet, reaffirming her rightful place in the world of symphonic metal. With her unmistakably beautiful voice, commanding delivery and instinctive sense of musical drama, ‘Frisson Noir’ stands as a memorable and defining moment in her career.
