Motionless in White: Decades

Following their latest album release in 2022, Motionless in White are set to return with their highly anticipated new album Decades, arriving on 17 July via Roadrunner Records. Marking another milestone in the band’s 20-year-long career, the album has already generated incredible excitement among fans eager to see Motionless in White once again make their mark on the metalcore scene. With its powerful themes, callbacks to the band’s history, and the promise of a new era, Decades is shaping up to be a defining release in their already impressive discography.

With the song ‘Decades’ featuring as both the title track and the opening track of the album, it’s no surprise that Chris Motionless made sure it packed a punch. Starting with a vicious track that drags the listener back to the era of Creatures, Decades pays tribute to the band’s trials and challenges, ultimately focusing on the fact that they are still here and as big as ever, with the lyrics from Chris following suit: “I’m still fucking here, is that all you fucking got?”

Next comes ‘log_in//crash_out’, with its title feeling like a callback to their 2019 track ‘</c0de>’. Once again, the song carries a strong theme of resistance and rebellion, with aggressive instrumentals backing equally intense lyrics about revolution. The electronic elements and heavily autotuned vocals towards the end create a futuristic yet almost apocalyptic atmosphere that perfectly matches the track’s message.

Following this is the beautiful ‘R.I.P’, featuring vocals from Skylar Grey. The track carries a similar emotional weight to songs like ‘Masterpiece’ and ‘Another Life’, while introducing even more personal lyrics that make it stand out, especially when compared to the heavier moments across the album.

Another major highlight, and already a fan favourite, is ‘Playing God’ featuring Corey Taylor. His powerful vocals add even more intensity to a song focused on social media, online hate and the negativity that comes with it, making its message feel especially relevant today. The track also shares similarities with previous Motionless in White songs like 2022 ‘Slaughterhouse’, particularly in its explosive ending, and 2017 ‘Soft’, which many fans view as its companion piece.

‘Love At First Bite’ offers another interesting moment, drawing comparisons to 2022 ‘Werewolf’ through its shared supernatural themes, while taking a more romantic direction. As expected from Motionless in White, the band avoids a simple love song approach, instead, they are using darker and more graphic imagery to express affection.

Perhaps the most defining song of the album, however, is ‘Afraid Of The Dark’, the first single released and the first glimpse fans had of Decades. A song about unity, courage and the bond between the band and their fans, it captures the overall message of the record through one of the most memorable lyrics in Motionless in White’s catalogue: “A creature that found a home”.

An honourable mention also goes to their cover of the 1983 Corey Hart’s classic ‘Sunglasses at Night’, which pays respect to the original while adding the band’s own unmistakable style. Chris’ vocals in particular help transform the track into something that feels like a true Motionless in White song rather than just a cover.

Overall, Decades has been crafted by all members of the band and beyond to be one of the best albums released in 2026 so far, and an absolute credit to band’s already phenomenal discography. With many small references to past songs, the album serves as a conclusion to the last two decades of Motionless in White, and hopefully, a nod towards at least two more decades of incredible music.
