Yellowcard: Better Days (Deluxe)
Yellowcard are back with a revamped edition of their Better Days album – and if you are hesitant about the need for such a release so soon after its predecessor, make sure to stay tuned for all the tricks up the pop-punk band’s sleeve.
Jumping right in, the deluxe record is an expanded work from the band’s latest record released in October 2025, consisting of four new and refashioned tracks. I know it sounds pretty modest, but hold your horses – this release is exactly why the phrase “quality over quantity” was coined.
Under #11 in the tracklist, we’re finding ‘Calvary Drive’ – the fresh-out-the-oven single by the band released in late August. In the typical uptempo beat for the pop-punk gurus, the song is steeped in a strongly flavoured pinch of nostalgia. It reminisces about a lost love and the bittersweet memories that can haunt you long after something beautiful has ended – at times, even way longer than one would easily admit:
“Somеone said your name to me today
I had to look away before my sorry eyes tell stories I can’t hide
I just wanna keep some part of you
A little bit of truth”
What I am also finding quite striking is that Yellowcard seem to nail the storytelling element in a perfect bow to their legacy: from their emblematic ‘Ocean Avenue’ to now a ‘Calvary Drive’ – we are shown that it’s all about the journey which is often made up of the geographical spots capturing a gazillion precious moments, segments of time standing still and coming back to life only through the everlasting power of nostalgia.
Next in line is ‘Hell With Me’ which comes with a refreshing feature from American DJ Steve Aoki. Suffice to say, the latter is giving the track a flawlessly attuned and high-energy vibe. Initially, the song stars as your typical catchy pop-punk tune, but wait until the second chorus and you’ll be amazed to find out just how effortlessly the genre could mix with the electro sound perfected by Steve Aoki. This was news to me, anyway.
The final two new entries on this record are reimagined versions of songs from the original album. The first addition is ‘Bedroom Posters’ which this time brings in pop-punk heavyweights Good Charlotte for an impressively impactful new interpretation of the song. The collaboration here is not too surprising though, as the two bands are set to tour together across Europe and the UK towards the year-end.
‘Better Days (Deluxe)’ finishes off with an ‘asleep’ version of the title track, taking the tempo several notches down and doing it in a mesmerising way, carried by each piano key.
